The book is out!  It is called Tiny Homes on the Move: Wheels and Water.

ttDOG and I were at my favourite bookstore the other day and look what we found:
The book that inspired us (left)
& the book we are in (right)!
Our 2-page spread :)!
We are still waiting for our complementary copies to arrive in the mail.  I've been checking the mailbox diligently... still not here.  But soon we hope!

Happy Reading!

Teeny Tiny Critter...

We live on a farm.  In the country.  Surrounded by forest.  Among all types of wildlife.  So.  It was bound to happen...

One day, I noticed little brown pellets on my counter.  In a healthy state of denial, I cleaned it up and assumed it was some food crumbs.  And suppressed any thoughts of them resembling mouse droppings.
Well.  The next day... there was more :(!
It had to be true:
Mice?!!!

We were due for some spring cleaning which tBOY and I had been putting off for weeks... so what better time than when some teeny tiny critter decides to move in to kickstart some serious sterilizing.

We pulled out all our baskets and storage containers to see where our uninvited friend (or friends - at that point we weren't sure how many were in the party, if there was a party) decided to hang out...
Behind the storage baskets: CHECK
Chewing the storage baskets: CHECK
Making a mess chewing the storage baskets: CHECK
Potato starch: CHECK
Yeast: CHECK
ttDOG's salmon treats: CHECK
In the towel basket: CHECK (luckily that is ttDOG's towel!)
Eventually, we just decided to take EVERYTHING out of the bus.  It turned out to be a whole-day project :(!
Moving stuff off the bus
Turns out we are dental floss hoarders!
It's because tBOY insists on Desert Essence Dental Tape
(and you can only get it in select stores, so we stock up)
and the dentist keeps giving us all those little ones...
So much for downsizing :)!
And while we were at it...
tBOY did some long overdue varnishing
And we cleaned under the bed
Of course, we had to try to figure out where the teeny tiny critters were coming in and we needed to seal any possible openings.
Nope.  Not through the front of the bus says tBOY
Ah ha!  Behind the stove, there is space around the pipe...
I had to climb over the counter and behind the stove
because the propane hose was not long enough for
us to move the stove completely out of its spot.
Thank goodness for the yoga I've been doing!
VoilĂ !  Nothing tin foil and duct tape can't fix!
And then.  We had to catch this little critter :(!  So...
What mouse can resist Dulce de Leche?
(Thanks friends from Venezuela!)
Sure enough.  At 2:33am.  SNAP!
We kept the trap out for a few more days... but nothing.  And no more mouse droppings... which we hope means... no more mice!

Quiet

We have come out of winter hibernation!  What happened this winter?  Well.  At first winter didn't come... and then it finally did... well sort of...
Our first snow fall
View of the new snow from the bus window
When it finally snowed, we were so excited to try the skis we bought WAY back in October...
Skiing around in our backyard :)!
tBOY putting the bike in the shed (yes, with his ski boots on) -
because we thought we were going to ski the rest of winter!!!
Happy dog in the snow!
But nope.  It was just a teaser.  The snow melted :(!
And our attempts at skiing were mostly wet, icy, foggy misadventures...
So... our bikes came back out of the shed... for a while...
As for the bus...
The frozen pipes defrosted.  It only happened on 2 occasions (that we blogged about).  We had a record cold winter (and record low precipitation).  Apparently water pipes of houses in the area froze as well, so we were not alone.  It was the wind more than the cold temperatures.  So a project this spring/summer is to create some sort of a skirt for the bus.

Condensation continued (continues) to be a problem.  Because of the temperature differential inside/outside the bus (and all that darn breathing we keep doing), there is a lot of moisture on the windows and especially on the metal.  We were hoping that curtains would help... but actually, that turned out to make the problem worse.  So we only have curtains (that are actually just old batik sarongs that I got in Thailand over 10 years ago) in our 'bedroom' area...
So what do we do?
To prevent condensation from falling behind the wood on the walls, tBOY put silicon on the edge of the windows...
That works to keep the water from going down, but it means that we have to occasionally mop up the water that accumulates with a cloth.  But we prefer condensation to having fewer windows.

tBOY also came up with this brilliant idea to insulate the back windows (that we always keep covered) by creating our own version of double-pane/triple-pane windows with....
Really.  No one can see this part of the bus!
Yep...  Bubble wrap!  I know.  Not the classiest look.  But it works amazingly well.  So well that I suggested that we cover more windows like that, but tBOY vetoed that right away (and I thought I was the one in charge of bus aesthetics!)  Those windows: no condensation AT ALL.  Zip  Nil.  Nada.

As for around the bus, tBOY built a teeny tiny firepit...
And then it snowed again and covered it for a long time.  But yesterday, we finally had our first fire.  tBOY was proud :)!
Remember our worries about the skylights?  About trees/branches falling onto them and breaking them?  Well, the crashpads we used were only a temporary fix since it blocked out all the light (and defeated the whole point of skylights).  Again, genius tBOY came up with an inexpensive solution (very important as there are always fancy expensive things you can buy).
A metal mesh that creates a dome around the glass...

From the inside, you hardly notice it and light shines through.
Oh.  Also.  I created a teeny tiny 'craft' area inside the bus (to deal with Winter blues!) that I didn't end up using as much as I wanted to...
I know that I usually have these 'clean and tidy' shots of the bus here, so I thought I would put one of the bus' usual 'lived-in' look...
So there you have it.  Winter is over!  And Spring is here :)!  We have been loving living on the bus, but have also been dreaming of warmer... sunnier places... some that a bus can drive to, and others that require a boat ride for the bus...  More on that another time.  For now, I'll leave you with some images of the fun we had this cold season...

Bye Bye Winter!

Showers are Overrated

I spoke too fast when I said that our frozen pipe problems were fixed.  We defrosted the kitchen sink  and thought: Problems-Be-Gone... But in the evening when we went to take a shower... Yep!  You guessed it.  Nothing.  No water.  Since it was late at night, we just made due with washing ourselves using the kitchen sink.  The next day (yesterday) we had a full day and didn't get to the water pipe issue.  tBOY and ttDOG went for a long bike ride and then tBOY went for a one-hour massage while I did arts & crafts with girlfriends on the bus.  Then we had fondue (with our beautiful new fondue set):
We figured we would deal with the situation today.  So this morning, tBOY got to work... crawling under the bus with the hair dryer :)!

Unfortunately, after 20 minutes, there was still no running water.  We think that there are a few places where the water is frozen and the hair dryer is not going to work.  So we did the most logical thing we could think of...
We went for a bike ride :)!

We're not sure how to tackle this water pipe problem.  We hope that warmer temperatures forecasted for later this week will defrost the pipes and then tBOY might go in and redo the insulation (with more heat tape).  We decided that this can be a project for Christmas holidays.  We are not too concerned about not having running water in the shower as we can either:
1. wash in the kitchen sink,
2. wash in the shower with a bucket of warm water (from sink) or
3. take a shower at tBrother's cabin (200m from our place).

So we went to ride bikes!  But brrr... It was COLD!! My fingers and nose were frozen like the pipes :(!  ttDOG protested against the ridiculous jacket we made her wear by refusing to leave the bus (but I think she thanked us for it once we got into the forest).

The stream was half frozen
ttDOG's fav part about bike rides... treats :)!

A stop at a sunny spot to warm up and check out the view
The lake was partly frozen.
tBOY thought it would be fun to put ttDOG's treat on the ice...
ttDOG is super cautious and wasn't sure about the ice (despite the treat!)
But after a little encouragement (and perhaps a push in the bum by tBOY)...
She got it!
After our ride, I went to pick up my new skis (the bindings were put on).  The worst part about this cold cold weather is that there is NO snow on the mountains for us to try out all our new slack-country ski gear.  So sad!

I guess I'll go take my shower in the kitchen sink now :)!
